Venice Carnival 2020
Venice Carnival 2020: just a few days are left before Venice’s most anticipated event of the year. Celebrations begin on Saturday 8 February and end on Fat Tuesday 25 February. As always, the definitive program is still a secret, but there will always be the usual must-see traditional events.
Water events kick off the 2020 Venice Carnival on the Rio di Cannaregio: the Pantegana Regatta in the morning, followed by jugglers and acrobats performing in the evening with fabulous special effects and lights that can be admired along the canal.
Piazza San Marco, of course, remains at the heart of the festival. It serves as the stage for the famous Svolo dell’Angelo, when a young woman dressed in historical clothes makes a spectacular descent from the San Marco bell tower down into the square. The role is awarded to the winner of the 2019 “Maria” competition, where local girls participate in the historical re-enactment of the Corteo delle Marie, another must-see event of the Carnival, and from which the most beautiful Maria is chosen. There will also be two other magical flights in Piazza San Marco: that of L’Aquila and that of Leone, but the star actors are still top secret for now.
Also in Piazza San Marco, every day there will be numerous parades competing for “La maschera più bella”, which will declare the most beautiful mask for the 2020 edition of the Venice Carnival.
Dances and masked parties are scheduled in many of the Venetian palaces. The Official 2020 Carnival Dinner & Ball, with live music and fabulous entertainment, will be held at Ca’ Vendramin Calergi, the splendid palace on the Grand Canal, home to the Venice Casino. Reservations required. Masks are mandatory.
